The Schipperke is a breed of dog that originated in Belgium and its origin dates back to the 15th Century. The Schip is a small dog that ranges in size from 12lbs – 20lbs and usually black colour. The Schipperke is known for having an expressive, fox-like face with small, erect ears and a unique silhouette. The silhouette of the Schipperke is defined by a longer haired ruff, cape, jabot and culottes giving the appearance of a more distinct front than rear. A double coated breed, the Schipperke is not considered hypo-allergenic and shedding is seasonal. Weekly brushing is required for their coat maintenance. Traditionally a docked breed, it is now common to see full tailed, as well as some natural bobtailed Schipperkes.

Schipperkes are curious and comical in nature. The Schipperke tends to be reserved with strangers and is an excellent watchdog. There is not a lot that gets past a Schipperke, their sharp bark will let you know something is amiss, and they can be quite persistent until you investigate the source!

The breed is known for getting along well with children and considered a very loyal companion. Schipperkes enjoy an active lifestyle; it is best to socialize early as well as get them into formal training classes. Schipperkes are extremely intelligent and athletic. The breed excels in many dog sports including rally obedience, agility, fly ball, barn hunt, nose work and sprinters to name a few due to their willingness to work and their high drive. An affectionate breed, the Schipperke is also used in pet therapy and as service dogs.

Moderate exercise and a fenced yard are recommended as well as formal training for their first few years. Training classes helps to create a bond that results in a positive dog/owner connection.

Responsible ownership is truly the key to a successful dog/owner relationship.
